Many people get surprised when things get rough. They shouldn’t be though.
If we’re talking about people in the West, I think this kind of surprise has something — maybe even lots — to do with a sense of an entitlement; to a comfortable life; to a happy life; to a life with no bumps, scrapes, bruises, breaks, frustrations, twists, and turns; or whatever, and what have you.
What especially worries me about this kind of surprise is that it means a lot of people will break down and give up when things get rough and retreat to a life of safety and vulnerability (for fear of ever being hurt or challenged again).
Look, life will get rough and there’s nothing we can do to avoid. But what we can do when things do get rough is push through with determination, hope, courage, and creativity; and keep pushing until something transcendent and beautiful is created.
