I just finished meeting with a friend who is considering sharing the writing they've been working on. We were dialoguing about what sort of things he wanted to share and what type of writer he wants to be. I always find meetings like this inspiring and life-giving, so the question is: why don't we creatives make the time for more meetings like this?
We were meant to be creative in community, yet we tend to opt for isolation as a default—even though now is the time to start getting connected and creating with other people.
Because all good artists mentor and are mentored.
Because all good artists lead and are led.
Because the image of the isolated artist is largely a harmful illusion we believe is valuable because it sort of looks cool in photos.
We can't stay isolated forever if we're going to do great work.
We need someone to challenge us. Push us. Encourage us.
